Dear Peter,

The Admissions Committee has completed its review of your application, and I am so happy to tell you loser that we don't want to offer you admission to MIT.

Please understand that this is a judgment of you as a student and as a person, because you just suck. Most of our applicants, who unlike you are among the best in the world, are not admitted because we simply do not have enough space in our entering class. You however just suck. This year we had over 12,000 applications for less than 1500 offers of admission, from which will come our 1000 freshmen. Since all of our decisions are made at one time and all available spaces have been committed, all decisions are final. Don't beg us.

Despite what you might think, the admissions process is an exact science. We have been able to figure out who you are down to your very essence, and have found you lacking. Our applicant pool is more self-selected than most, with a very high percentage of top students, virtually all of whom have distinction in demanding academic programs as well as outstanding achievement in their lives outside of the classroom-- unlike you. We evaluate each applicant’s materials carefully and select those we judge to be the best match for our community.

I am very happy to bring you such disappointing news when you have worked so hard. You are a terrible student, and I do wish you crash and burn as you continue with your education.

Sincerely,

Ima Nonymous
Dean of Admissions

Today afterschool, I was accosted by a pair of girls who wanted to take a picture of me standing next to one of them. My confusion was of titanic proportions, so I asked why. The answer? Facebook.

Yes, the great monster is encroaching step by step into the life of our high school. It breeds empty desires to post fragmented images of 'life,' selected for the hopes of the picture-taker. It creates mountains of links, images, labels, descriptions, all as a "social networking tool." It results in people seeking superiority over one another in "friend count".

On the other hand, how is it more empty than anything else? What is there but some vague feeling that we are people and that we like to be liked?

So it was my birthday yesterday. I am now Yellow Pig years old. (Yellow Pig stands in for a certain prime number greater than the day of the month this birthday was and less than the age necessary to vote).

In any case, it is time I move on to better things. Hopefully I won't be abandoning LiveJournal quite so much in future.

At 16:19 today, Senator Feingold presented a Motion to Censure the President

Democratic Senator Feingold of Wisconsin presented a fairly persuasive speech starting around 16:19 today, arguing that the President's illegal Wiretapping program deserved Censure. After an attempt to disrupt it by Senator Frist (Republican Senate Majority Leader) this then proceeded into a 25 minute speech hammering the Administration on its complete disregard for the Congress's (constitutional) FISA (And NSA) legislation.

Immediately afterward, Senator Arlen Spector (R-Penn) began a far more disorganized rebuttal. He simultaneously stated that Feingold had not proven that the President did not have the inherent constitutional authority to unlimited wiretapping, but then disapproved to the president's policy, saying he should have obeyed the National Security Act...

When people say Democrats are wishy-washy and have no clear plan, I think they should look at the Republicans the same way...

EDIT:
However, I do not dislike Senator Spector for this. In fact, I find it a good thing that he, unlike most Republicans, shows a certain degree of separation from the President and did not just mindlessly agree. He later added that, "I do not know," if the President's program is unconstitutional. He said that "You shouldn't call the president a criminal until you do know."

AIME Grand Concours GBML

Alphabet Soup.

In a world of bureaucracy, it is unsurprising that the names of many competitions are frequently shortened of acronyms, such as American Invitational Mathematics Examination AIME, or Greater Boston Math League GBML. What is surprising though is that they might occur on consecutive days.

Yesterday was the date of the AIME (pronounced Amy). It was an exhausting three hour long math competition, beginning early in the morning. Unfortunately for me, yesterday March the seventh was also the date of the French Grand Concours. That was rather annoying, as that one hour long French competition then occured over my exhausted brain.

Today happened to be the date of the GBML playoffs. A bunch of nearby school brought their Math Teams to ours, and we competed. However, just to mess things up some more, none of the Seniors on the Needham Math Team showed up. I was left to manage a gutted team, and assemble it into requisite subteams. But due to other circumstances beyond my control, the fifth strongest person available to me ended up being placed on team B because of uncertainty and delays.

Oh well. At least all three of these competitions were fun, Right?

They were. But it's still exhausting.
